I have a set of those bars.

I use them to hold down the bird netting over my strawberry patch.

Before that they were in the chicken coop but the chickens didn't like them.

They're in a pot. It's one of those ones with the bit at the bottom where the water can drain to.

But I don't want basil. I want strawberries. I'll keep trying. Moved them back inside to the window sil. May have to buy a few more to replace them and start over.

How big is the pot? Their roots need a lot of room to grow properly, you need to take them out of the little pots they come in and either plant them in the ground or a big strawberry planter or a really big pot, 20 liters at a minimum.

The plants also need to be well drained but watered regularly. If they are sitting around pools of water that's bad because it encourages pests and illnesses. Better to just water them regularly, it's okay for the soil to be a bit dry for a little bit. If you are growing in big pots my tip would be to flood the pot every day or two (if there is no good rain) until the water starts trickling out the bottom.

Heat is a bit iffy. As long as its a moist heat they'll be okay, I raise all mine on the bottom level of my greenhouse before they go into the ground and they do fine because they get regular water and a bit of shade on hot days. If you have the strawberry plants in little black pots on hard surface outdoor areas and especially up against walls, that oven environment just cooks them. Even if they are sitting in water, the water gets too hot and it cooks them. The colour of the pot is very important too, anything dark is just going to hold heat in around the plants on hot summer days (but also cold winter days).

So in sum, big pots (terracotta is always good), well drained soil, water regularly, use a natural fertiliser (can't go wring with composted sheep crap) and always mulch (straw is good, sugar cane fiber is good too, pine mulch - not chips - is really good).

If you want you can come down I'll give you some plants, they are the running variety so the make berries and new plants.

Gee I've really hijacked Scottie's thread now haven't I...

The pot I'm using is one of these and I stuck 3 plants in there evenly spaced.
