Hey fellas,
Looks like I might be going in for knee surgery, I knew it was coming though and I don't see any other way around it. I see a Orthopedic specialist on Friday for confirmation, I injured my knee about 7 months ago and it never healed properly which is why I have been slow to start riding flatland again and there has been some concerns. I have been trying to shake off the 12kgs I put on in the last six months because I could not exercise and even walking around the block causes problems, I am a little gutted but hopefully I will make a speedy recovery so I can start riding.
If anyone has had surgery on their knee before please post cause it seems hard to find someone who has to get an idea of recovery time, I guess I will know on Friday though. The injury was a radial tear on the inner third of the medial miniscus, apparently there is only a 40% chance that it would heal by itself otherwise surgery is an option. It was a work injury so go figure, I bet of I did this playing sport or something else they would have operated on it already but of course I am dealing with insurance companies.
Anyway I might not be on the scene for a while but believe me I am keen as hell to start riding flatland again and you guys will have another rider for the Perth crew! <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s --> I already sussed out some lit car parks close to home for night sessions and did anyone say netball courts?? I got eight 10 minutes by car from my house (sometimes lit up at night) and of course the conny hall is a must, see y'all later. Hopefully update on Friday.

Yo!
Sorry to hear about your knee Scottie. Three has the down low, I had a full knee reconstruction a few years back now. I didn't just break, I destroyed my ACL and PCL - basically the ligaments that stop the bottom half of your leg moving forward and your leg bending sideways. Before the op I could move the lower half of my leg 45degrees inward and without surgery I wouldn't be walking, or for that matter riding, again.
I now have replacement ligaments in there tightened down by a bunch of screws. What was scheduled to be a 1.5hr operation turned out to be almost 4. My surgeon told me later that when he opened it up, it was like looking into a can of spaghetti it was that bad.
After the op I had my leg in a full leg brace for 3 months while the ligaments grafted/healed into my body and during that time all the muscles in my entire leg wasted away. After the 3 months I had an awesome physio who helped me out a bunch. I had a full rehabilitation schedule and I went at it hardcore. Riding is what I do and I was proper motivated to come back stronger than before so I put everything into it for probably the next 6-9 months.
My days were: Get up at 7am - go for an hour long walk that progressed to running eventually as my leg got stronger. Then had a 1.5hr pool session where i did various exercises. The afternoons where a 2 hour gym session followed by more walking/running. This was basically 6 days a week with one to rest. I focused a lot on walking/running without a limp and didn't drive or whatever anywhere, I just walked.
My diet was good - no bad food, no alcohol (alcohol causes swelling = slower healing times) and drank a lot of water.
In all I hit my goal of back to riding hardcore flat within 9 months of my operation. I was riding a bike sooner, but I wanted to make sure I was totally healthy, physically and mentally, before trying tricks. That was the longest time I've had away from riding in my time so I was keen to get back on it! Getting the scar tissue out to gain full mobility took a while though from memory.
I've just had another surgery on my arm now (arthroscopy) so I'm kinda re-visiting some of this but won't be out as long.
The key thing is make sure you have a good surgeon, being committed to your rehab 150%, good diet, be positive, kill out the beers and your body will be sweet. About braces, my physio once told me they don't encourage them because the body forms a dependency on it and doesn't allow the body to develop the same level of resilience to injury that it would normally have.
Nowadays I take 1500mg of fish oil a day, 1000mg of Glucosomine and 250mg of Chondroitin - all things "supposedly" good for cartilage and joint repair.
So that's a kinda long-winded response so I hope there's something in there for you that's useful. When I had mine done I was researching everything, everywhere for tips! If you want to know more, or bounce ideas, or whatever hit me up!
Good luck with it dude, you'll be back hammering it in no time!

Hello again,
Some good info here, I am going in for minor surgery on the 30th of June and will be out of work for 6 weeks and should back to pre-injury status in about 3 or 4 months from then I guess. I am fucken pissed but what do you do, anyway looks like a long road to recovery cause it will already be hard enough starting to ride flatland again after such a long time [Image Can Not Be Found] Anyway if you see some random dude on a Hoffman that went out of fashion ten years ago riding flat at the conny hall sometime around OctoberISH (I hope), then you know its me, hardy har har. Well can't the F word enough about this situation but I catch yall in some months from now for a session, cheers.
And thanks for to good luck too, peace.
