During my trip to Europe of course one of the obvious sights was the amount of people who use bicycles to get around. There seem's to be a lot more respect and awareness for cyclists by drivers over there. A few times I hired a bike to get around and never wore a helmet and found it most enjoyable.
I think helmets should perhaps only be compulsory for those under 16 and optional for everyone else.

I don't really understand how so many people care about it. It's not really a big deal to wear a helmet.
And those that DO get fined must be doing something to attract masses of attention. I've been pedalling all around Melbourne for the last few years and haven't had a single fine. I don't even own a helmet. I've had one cop yell out their window at me, but I've also been on my bike next to a cop car at the lights and they haven't done a thing.
On the other hand, I've had some fuckwit on a roadie get really aggressive at me for not having a helmet or lights.

Sounds good to me. Older than that, if you're too stupid/tough to not wear one, all the better. Kinda like natural selection?
