At the beginning of 2004 nobody really knew who Justin Miller was. Amazingly, he'd only been riding for a few years. I remember when I first saw him very clearly. I was riding from the centre of Cologne across the river to the Jugendpark - the site of the BMX Worlds/Masters and numerous other events. There was this guy under a bridge busting out on a cracked footpath that nobody would want to ride. He did a 360 kickflip followed by another one straight after and his bars didn't touch the ground. He was 19 years old and he looked like the kinda dude that shot animals for fun. I didn't know who he was and was really hoping that he wasn't riding in the Masterclass! By the end of that weekend everyone knew who he was. Justin Miller. He's not my favourite rider because his style is very contest focussed. I also think that he did way too many halfpackers. However, he is without a doubt the greatest contest rider of all time - He also showed Martti a thing or two about kickflips.
He suddenly quit and I never really knew why. Observing him at his contests I always knew that he kinda thought that he sucked because he let other riders get in his head and got upset and easily intimidated by them.
I also never forget the time that Matthias (the first place qualifier at Flatground) got to choose his opponent to battle and got his ass handed to him by Justin. I know he could do it again too with the same tricks that he was doing a few years ago.
Anyway, have a read "slick".

I remember watching an early vid of him at a contest, and he said something like 'I like hunting, fishing... Flatland isn't my whole life'. He was studying some kind of technical degree, so no doubt when he graduated he would be spending all his time on his new profession.
Agreed, he spent too much time half-packin', and another pro rider has been quoted saying to Justin 'You won't win if you just do half-packer variations', and at the same contest, Martti dissed Justin, which led to Justin posting some kind of retaliation on his MySpace page against him.

Often Justin didn't win because of the lack of variety. If other guys rode perfectly they beat him. Keelan won a contest, Martti second and Justin third. They were both so disappointed to be beaten by a new fish - He deserved it though. He was original and showed so much variety in his run.
Kickflip to backpacker though!!! It's the hardest kickflip trick to go down so far. Still waiting for Justin to come back and do a kickflip Katrina in TA's face!

You know Paul, even if you do talk sort of weird...
Even though, I am countries away from even meeting him, I had a weird feeling about Justin Miller, Everytime I see him in a comp he seems nervous, shy... even withdrawn. Yet I am gobsmacked (see the pommy phrasing I am using to connect?) by the wild stuff he pulls.
At the same time, I have a voice that says a backpacker to hiker kickflip isn't as hard as a straight line hiker.. call me weird, but maybe I'm just seeing differently... It's like seeing someone perform a trick you thought was completely impossible..
Then someone pulls it blind folded.. There"s a mind trip that happens.
I'm not putting down Terry here at all, because God damn.. Terry knows how to milk it, knows how to play it out, and if Terry did this trick as hardcore as Justin did, he would be playing it out all over (and inside) the magazines... just like Terry would..
Wait, what was I saying... I don't care, I love 'drop the bomb' (go insane..) tricks.
